CMNF did not enter European art with Édouard Manet’s famous and at the time much-maligned Déjeuner sur l’herbe. This painting, known as Fiesta campestre, begun by Giorgione shortly before his death in 1510 and probably finished by his disciple Titian afterwards, has a very similar theme. Manet undoubtedly knew it, since it had been hanging in the Louvre ever since that building became a museum.
