After his coronation as Roman emperor in 1155, Frederick I. Barbarossa had this reliquary in the shape of his head made of gilded bronze and gave it as a present to his godfather Odo, provost of Cappenberg Abbey. It is considered the first standalone portrait since the times of Charlemagne, but probably did not aspire to great realism.
