Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph was the only son of Napoleon III and as such became pretender to the French throne after the latter’s death. He lived in exile in England and fell, under somewhat strange circumstances that led to nasty rumors, in the Zulu War he had insisted joining. He was only 23 years old. Field Marshal Garnet Joseph Wolseley said about him:
He was a plucky young man, and he died a soldier’s death. What on earth could he have done better?
This portrait by Jules Joseph Lefebvre was exhibited in 1874, it shows the Prince about eighteen years old.
