This painting by William Bouguereau, Femme au coquillage (Woman with a shell, 1885) was auctioned at Sotheby’s New York on October 25, 2005. The estimate was $300,000–400,000, but I guess it fetched a lot more, since Bouguereau’s paintings tend to sell at prices between one and two million.
