Alfonso X of Castile: Cantiga

LADY, for the love of God,
Have some pity upon me!
See my eyes, a river-flood
Day and night, oh, see!
Brothers, cousins, uncles, all,
Have I lost for thee;
If thou dost not me recall,
Woe is me!

Translation by Thomas Walsh, first printed 1920.

  1. Alfonso was born in 1221. He became King of Castile, León and Galicia in 1252 and died in 1284. More than any other monarch of his time he used vernacular for official texts. This is one of the 420 Galician Cantigas de Santa Maria, which he collected and possibly wrote at least in part.
