This painting was discovered in the Master’s Lodge of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in 1952. Written on it is anno domini 1585, aetatis suae 21, quod me nutrit, me destruit. Since the year and age would fit the biography of Christopher Marlowe, and no other student of Corpus Christi, it is generally believed to be a portrait of the poet, who would within the next few years write his first play, Tamburlaine the Great.
