Sine Cerere et Baccho friget Venus (Love is cold without Ceres and Bacchus, that is, without bread and wine) is a quote from Terence’s comedy Eunuchus (Act IV, line 5). It was a popular motif for allegorical paintings for a while, this one by Bartholomäus Spranger is especially beautiful, though Bacchus looks castrated.
