Saint Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, has a vision where the True Cross is located, symbolized by the little angel holding a cross. This painting is a good argument for Théophile Gautier’s claim that Paolo Veronese was the greatest colorist that ever lived. The Venetian school of painting in general thought color more important than outline, and preferred warm colors.
