Alexandre Cabanel, Nymphe et Satyre, 1860

Alexandre Cabanel: Nymphe et Satyre (1860)

L.J. David: Venitienne a sa toilette

Jacques Louis Jules David: Venetian Lady at her Toilet (1860)

This picture is often attributed to Jacques-Louis David, even though it’s clearly dated 1860, when David was already 35 years dead. It was actually painted by his confusingly similar named grandson Jacques Louis Jules David, who was also an art historian and among his grandfather’s first biographers. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1849 where he studied with Léon Cogniet and François-Édouard Picot, who in turn was a student of the elder David.

The painting measures 148 × 96 cm and was auctioned at Sotheby’s New York on October 29, 2002. The estimate was $20,000–30,000.
